How much is too much?

I am guessing I consume about 1/2 of those small sticks of wax a day.  Is this bad for me?

The problem is, I put it on in the morning before I go to work.  Sometimes I forget about it.  When I have lunch or pick up a snack in the break room, inevitably the wax comes loose.  When I'm with my colleagues, I'm not about to start picking it out of my teeth in front of them, so I just swallow it.  I assume the wax is safe, because it's safe to put it in your mouth, right?

Still trying to get used to brushing my teeth in public, too.  I'm really self-conscious about it!  But it's really terrible to go around with food stuck in your braces all day.

Ah, the life of braces!

  1. Have you only started putting the wax on since you got your top braces? I remember when I first got mine on I was using so much wax that I thought I was going to run out within a week. I found that after a few days my mouth 'hardened up' to the braces, and now I hardly ever use the wax. I also had the problem of swallowing it when I ate, but I'm guessing it's safe - surely they know theres a big chance of swallowing it and wouldn't give it to us if it wasn't!

I'm in my last month of uni and will (hopefully!) be getting a job soon, and I'm sure I will have the same brace and lunch related issues that you're having! I think I'll end up spending half my lunch hour cleaning my teeth and picking bits out my brace!

  2. HI Ellie! Your post is funny! When I first got my braces, I wore wax religiously. But you will find after only a short while, that you no longer need it. Your gums will get used to the braces being there and you won't get all sore. It's weird. I never ever use wax now unless I get something new put on, like my surgical hooks. I had to wear wax for a week when I got those but now...they don't bother me at all.

  3. =D lol. I wish it were a matter of toughening up! It's actually my lower right canine that's causing the trouble. It was rotated sideways, and now that it's turning into place, that little hook on the bottom of the bracket keeps finding a new place to dig in every moment... Other than that bad boy, I haven't had a lot of trouble with the brackets, but a little glob of wax covers him constantly.

Sarah--good luck with finishing up uni!
