Something I found out that's rather consoling...
My orthodontist had this surgery done about 12 years ago with the same surgeon I will have! So, this is good in a double way---I have the surgeon my ortho trusted for himself AND my ortho had this surgery done when he was in his 40s, which makes me feel better knowing I'm already well into my thirties.
And, even more, my ortho's daughter had this surgery with the same surgeon, so I feel that I must be in good hands. :)
Ellie, when will you be having surgery again? I am looking for a December buddy (if I am ready by then but so far I'm on track).
ReplyDeleteI know there are supposed to be risks that come with age but I have done extensive research (i.e., blog reading, googling) and have found nothing more prevelant in 30 somethings than I have in 20 somethings, other than it does seem that recovery takes a bit longer. I have also noticed that older people tend to be more anxious over the surgery and the recovery process. I'm just trying to prepare myself for this since I'm 33 myself. Not sure if age has a lot to do with it but this is just my analysis.
I have also noticed a direct correlation between permanent numbness and age although the one comfort I found in this is that in every single case, those with permanent numbness still felt the surgery was worth it and would do it again. The numbness was just something they adapted to.
Best of luck on your journey! Also, I see we share the same occupation :-)
Tara
It's always comforting to hear from other people's experiences. My surgeon told me that he treats every patient like they are a daughter or son. They will take every care with you and if a wuss like me can get through it I'm sure you can! I look forward to seeing your progress and recovery on the other side.
ReplyDeleteHi Tara!! (fellow CPA, yes?)
ReplyDeleteI don't have a surgery date yet, but I'm sure it won't be as soon as December. I was told I'd have to have braces for TWO years before surgery, and this December will only be one year. It seems that everyone else has surgery much sooner than I will, so maybe it will change. Numbness and relapse are my main concerns for the surgery (well, and change in appearance...). I hope things work out better with your power chains! I haven't had them yet, but I drink a lot of coffee, so I'll keep that in mind about the power threads.
Cat--thank you! You are looking better every day! :)
Wow! That is incredibly good news! :-)
